Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the temple you see glinting on the mountain from anywhere in Chiang Mai. Built around a relic in 1383, it is the city's most sacred site and its best viewpoint, 15 km and about 35 minutes from the Old City. Come early: by 09:00 the car park fills with tour vans.

Why go

The golden chedi is beautiful, but the reason to go is the whole ritual: the 306-step Naga staircase, the bells along the terrace, monks chanting at dawn and the city spread out below with planes lining up for the airport. On a clear cool-season morning you can see Doi Inthanon on the horizon.

What to see

  • The Naga staircase: 306 steps flanked by two serpent balustrades. Walk up at least once; the cable car is for the way down.
  • The chedi terrace: walk around the chedi clockwise three times, as Thai visitors do, then ring the row of bells.
  • The viewpoint: at the far end of the lower terrace. Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the clearest.
  • The museum and murals: small and easy to skip, but a cool refuge at midday.

How to get there

From the Old City
red songthaew from Chiang Mai Zoo, 40 THB per person shared, or Grab for about 250 to 350 THB one way.
From the airport or Mae Hia
Grab, about 40 minutes and 350 to 450 THB. Ask the driver to wait or book a return; cars are scarce at the top after dark.
Own scooter
the road is good but steep with hairpins. Only ride it if you already ride at home.
On foot
the Monk's Trail from behind the university, 1.5 to 2 hours, pays the 100 THB national park fee.

Tips

  • Shoulders and knees covered. Sarongs are lent at the entrance if you forget.
  • The 30 THB fee is for foreign visitors; Thais enter free.
  • Combine it with the Hmong village at Doi Pui, 20 minutes further up, or with Wat Phra That Doi Kham, its quieter "sister temple" above Mae Hia.
  • Stay for the 18:00 evening chanting if you can; the terrace empties and the lights come on.
